Karyn Scerri

Karyn Scerri is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the University of Malta, under the supervision of Prof. Maria Attard. Karyn received her B.A. Hons in Geography (Summa Cum Laude) and holds a Msc in Sustainable Development (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Malta. Her PhD research focuses on understanding the impact of laziness on people's travel behaviour particularly for short-distance trips, using pedestrian-focused intervention as a tool for analysis. The mixed-method study is framed within the context of the Euro-Mediterranean island of Malta and aims to identify the barriers and facilitators of walking as a mode of transport for short-distance trips and also provide policy-relevant findings sustained by direct feedback from the community to reduce car-dependence and time spent sedentary in motorised vehicles. Besides her PhD research, she is also involved in research projects on nudging active travel and sustainable mobility with the University of Malta.
