Taking a closer look at the importance of public transport ridership for commuters

By Subeh Chowdhury
Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
University of Auckland

Abstract
In metropolitan car-centric cities, commuter’s strong dependency on cars for mobility has contributed to a sedentary life-style. It has had an adverse effect on health both directly (through high rates of obesity) and indirectly through noise pollution, and air pollution – which have led to respiratory issues. Globally, government agencies are promoting active modes (walking and cycling) and public transport use by strategically implementing policies and infrastructure to encourage a mode shift from private vehicles. However, barriers to the use of these facilities still exist from a social justice perspective, in particular gender and racial equity. The mode people choose has a significant influence their long-term health (physical and mental well-being). This talk will take a look at the importance of public transport to society, from a social justice perspective, and how we can improve ridership.
