The Smart Public Transport Lab of TU Delft is officially launched on 27 November. Jan Dirk Jansen, dean of the faculty of CEG, and Serge Hoogendoorn, head of the Transport and Planning department, opened this new lab by checking in with their fingerprint in the public transport of the future.

The lab conducts scientific research into improved public transport planning and operations with practical applications. The researchers are often looking for the optimal mix of classic and new (shared) modalities to achieve societal goals, such as accessibility, sustainability and equality. In the lab, models and methods are developed to understand and predict passenger behavior in order to develop better networks, timetables and service control and management.

In the morning session, some 130 public transport professionals discussed the future of public transport, introduced by Deborah Nas of TU Delft and Sylvain Haon of the global public transport network UITP. The CEOs of Arriva, Keolis and HTM, Anne Hettinga, Gosse Veenstra and Jaap Bierman, respectively, also shared their visions of the future. On behalf of the public transport authorities, Jan van Selm (DOVA) reflected on these perspectives.

In the afternoon, the researchers led active sessions. In five sessions, research results and plans were presented on the NorthSouth Line, traveler behavior, data, flexible public transport and traveler perception of unreliability.
